GEPCO Net Metering: How to Apply in Gujranwala and North Punjab
Net metering lets you export surplus solar electricity to the grid and receive bill credit. For the national overview, read our complete Pakistan net metering guide. This page covers the specific process for GEPCO, the Gujranwala Electric Power Company.
GEPCO Service Area
GEPCO serves Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, and Narowal. This is one of Pakistan’s most industrialised regions. Sialkot’s export-oriented factories and Gujranwala’s steel and fan manufacturing units consume massive amounts of electricity. Residential demand is equally high, driven by dense urban populations and heavy summer AC use.
GEPCO territory receives 4.8-5.2 peak sun hours daily, making solar a strong fit for both residential and industrial consumers.
Eligibility
• Connection type: Residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural consumers with an active GEPCO meter.
• System capacity: Minimum 1 kW. Maximum up to your sanctioned load.
• Meter: Bidirectional net meter supplied and installed by GEPCO at the applicant’s cost.
• Inverter: Grid-tied with anti-islanding protection. IEC 62109 certification required.
• Installer: PEC-registered solar contractor with a valid licence.
Step-by-Step Application Process
1. Submit Your Application
GEPCO accepts net metering applications at its divisional and sub-divisional offices. The head office is at Katchery Road, Gujranwala. For Sialkot, Gujrat, and Mandi Bahauddin, submit at the respective divisional offices. In-person submission is the standard method.
2. Required Documents
• Applicant’s CNIC copy (front and back)
• Latest GEPCO electricity bill (not older than 3 months)
• Single-line diagram (SLD) signed by a PEC-registered engineer
• System specifications: panel model, wattage, quantity, inverter model and capacity
• PEC licence copy of the installing contractor
• Inverter datasheet with anti-islanding compliance
• Panel IEC compliance certificates
• Prescribed GEPCO/NEPRA application form
• Indemnity bond on stamp paper
3. Application Fee
GEPCO charges a processing fee of approximately PKR 15,000-20,000 for residential systems up to 10 kW. The bidirectional meter cost is separate, typically PKR 8,000-15,000 depending on phase configuration. Industrial consumers should confirm fee schedules with their GEPCO division as fees scale with system capacity.
4. Technical Review and Site Inspection
After document review, GEPCO schedules a site inspection. The team verifies system capacity, inverter configuration, wiring, earthing, and protection devices. Expect inspection scheduling within 20-35 days after application acceptance. Sialkot and Gujranwala city applications tend to process faster than rural areas in Narowal or Hafizabad.
5. Agreement and Meter Installation
After passing inspection, GEPCO executes the net metering agreement and installs the bidirectional meter. Total timeline: 40-70 days. During peak season (March-June), allow up to 90 days.
Net Metering vs Net Billing Under NEPRA 2026 Rules
Under NEPRA’s 2026 prosumer regulations, new GEPCO net metering connections operate under net billing. Surplus electricity exported to the grid earns approximately Rs. 11 per unit. Electricity imported from the GEPCO grid is charged at the standard tariff of Rs. 48-60 per unit for residential consumers.
For GEPCO’s industrial consumers, especially Sialkot’s export factories running daytime shifts, self-consumption ratios of 80-95% are achievable. Nearly every solar unit offsets a full-price grid unit. SOL AI tracks this ratio in real time so you can optimise load scheduling.
How to Check Application Status
Contact your GEPCO sub-division office with your application reference number. The GEPCO helpline is 0800-55277. For Gujranwala city, the head office handles escalations. In-person follow-up at the subdivision level yields the best results.
Common Issues and How to Avoid Them
• Industrial load complexities: Sialkot and Gujranwala have many industrial connections with complex tariff structures. Ensure your sanctioned load and connection category are accurately documented before applying.
• Transformer loading in industrial zones: Many factories share distribution transformers near capacity. Verify transformer availability with your local GEPCO office before system design.
• Seasonal backlogs: GEPCO receives heavy application volumes between March and June. Apply during winter months for faster processing.
• Document formatting: GEPCO offices in smaller cities like Narowal can be particular about document presentation. Ensure all documents are clearly printed and SLD matches the installed system precisely.
• Earthing in industrial areas: GEPCO inspectors check earthing resistance. Industrial areas with compacted or disturbed soil may need additional earthing rods to achieve the required threshold below 2 ohms.
